An exhibition titled 'British Surrealism' is taking place at the Dulwich Picture Gallery from 26th February until 17th May 2020, featuring Bacon’s Figures in a Garden, 1935.
'British Surrealism' will explore the contribution and responses that British artists made to the Surrealist movement, whether they were involved directly as surrealists or were significantly influenced by it.
The exhibition layout itself ignores order and chronology, a strategy intended to echo the mischief and provocation of the movement. It is arranged to reflect the modes and methods of surrealism; with sections on war, dreams, the unconscious, the uncanny, radical politics, sex and desire. A common creative urge between all the artists on display is emphasised throughout the show, suggesting the power of a distinctly British subconscious.
Preceding being on display at the Dulwich Picture Gallery Figures in a Garden has been included in exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Millennium Gallery, Palazzo Reale and the Tate Britain.
