Bacon’s Fragment of a Crucifixion, 1950 is currently on display in Kunsthalle Bremen’s Icons: Worship and Adoration. For the first time, the museum’s entire gallery space is dedicated to a single exhibition, with 60 rooms each hosting a single work from one of the 60 artists featured. Alongside Bacon are Vincent van Gogh, J. M. W. Turner, Yves Klein, Mark Rothko, Bill Viola and Jeff Koons. The exhibition examines how the concept of an icon unites worship and adoration. The show runs until 1st March 2020.

When this painting was first exhibited at the Hanover Gallery in September 1950, it helped cement the perception that among London’s avant-garde critics and artists that Bacon was a unique force in British art.
