Figure in a Room, 1962 is currently displaying at Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea. The painting was created using oil on canvas and first exhibited as part of a group exhibition in Eindhoven from 21 October - 9 December 1962. The painting has only been exhibited four times in a group exhibition, and only once in a solo show. We are delighted that it is now on permanent display at the Leeum.
The painting features a figure on a wedge-shaped dais, much like another painting from the same period, Woman on a Red Couch, 1961. The dark palette, twisted body and blood-red streaks across the figure combine to create an intense, bleak impression.
The early 60s was a prolific time for the artist. In 1961 Bacon moved to 7 Reece Mews and the first-floor studio was to become the most important room in his life. 1962 proved to be a particularly busy year for the artist and he was honoured with a retrospective at Tate Britain, London, for which he finished his first large-scale triptych Three Studies for a Crucifixion, 1962 just in time to be included. After this came a period when he created a number of large-scale triptychs such as Three Figures in a Room, 1964 and Three Studies of Lucian Freud, 1969.
