One good way to spend more time at home could be learning about the world of art and gaining a deeper understanding of artists’ creative process. Our teaching and learning resource uses four of Bacon’s most distinct works as starting points for artistic and visual enquiry, including Study After Velázquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X, 1953.
The downloadable PDF can be used to encourage independent research, provoke group discussions, support sketchbook work or simply invite new ways of looking at your favourite artist’s work. Each section has been set-up to be self-contained, so that readers can choose to read from beginning to end or simply pick the elements most relevant to them without needing to refer to the rest of the pack.
Each chapter opens with a ‘First Look’ section, intended as an introductory exercise to encourage close observation and use of art vocabulary. Following this, an ‘In More Depth’ section shares background information about that chapter’s featured work, along with an exploration of two major artistic themes. To provoke thought and discussion there are also questions, along with suggested practical activities.
The resource was initially created to complement the Art and Design Curriculum at Key Stage 3 in the United Kingdom, but is intended to support and inspire students and teachers of all levels.
