TWO MORE BACON WORKS ON DISPLAY IN EDINBURGH

In addition to Figure Study I, C. 1945-46. and Figure Study II, C. 1945-46 being on display at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern One), Francis Bacon's Pope I, 1951 and Study for a Portrait March 1991 have also joined them in a collection until 30 May 2018.

Pope I, 1951, has been loaned by the Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums Collections.

Martin Harrison in the Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonné comments: ‘The three Pope paintings that Bacon made in the autumn of 1951 were further signs of the paramount importance of the subject in his iconography. He would revisit it on many occasions during the next fourteen years.’

Study for a Portrait March 1991, was one of last paintings Francis Bacon completed, and the second in a series of three portraits of his friend, the artist Anthony Zych. Although Zych was unaware Bacon was making the portrait, as Bacon true to form worked from photographs.

Zych wrote to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art to say that Bacon had been very disappointed when he failed to recognise his likeness. Yet Zych remarked: ‘although I see now that it is in fact slyly and accurately observed in details of clothing and especially in the overall stance and profile’.
